Teach with Confidence aims to inspire new teachers to trust their ability to reflect and grow, and have an improved sense of their own agency in managing dissonance. The exploration of domains weaves in stories and research from practitioners and scholars to show how beliefs, knowledge, and skill in building relationships are critical elements of excellence. Like the stone pines depicted on the cover with their timeless beauty, stability, and strength, teachers need to take a long view, knowing that improvement will come with hard work and a responsive, nuanced approach to practice.

Alexandra Miletta, PhD, is a former elementary teacher and teacher educator. She has published and presented research on classroom climate, teacher education, and practitioner research.

“A book that navigates the joys and challenges of classroom management through the eyes of an experienced teacher and scholar in ways that are accessible, engaging and usable to novice teachers is a rare find.  This book is indeed a rare find. Teach with Confidence is not afraid to explore the complexity of learning and teaching. Each chapter focuses on specific opportunities and tensions in navigating classroom management that go well beyond the typical ‘to do’ lists of what an educator should take notice of.  Instead, Miletta weaves together a holistic approach to classroom management  with key ideas illuminated through her rich descriptions of practice throughout. This is a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of what it means to approach classroom management in ways that promote equity, wellbeing, creativity and achievement for all students.”

“Alexandra Miletta's insightful book intelligently synthesizes the most thoughtful and dynamic ideas in the educational literature to help new teachers to create classroom communities that support empathy, respect, and honest intellectual engagement.  Her work on reflection in particular is beautifully written, accessible, and clear.  At the same time, it provides teachers and teacher educators with a model of how to reflect analytically on small interactions and experiences in the classroom which might otherwise go unnoticed.”

“I have used Alexandra Miletta's book with my student teachers. They found it the most helpful of all that I assigned. It was accessible, clear, reflective and practical. It connected with theory without making it a barrier to recognizing the complexity of real classroom practice.”
